The Disappearances by Emily Bain Murphy

After Aila’s mother dies, Aila and her brother Miles go to live with her mother’s best friend from childhood in Sterling, a small town halfway across the country. Things in Sterling seem strange though – why can’t Aila see her reflection in a mirror, or smell the flowers in the garden, or see the stars?

Aila soon learns that Sterling and its citizens are under a curse – every 7 years is a “disappearance” where the Sterling townspeople lose some ability or gift. Although many theories have been suggested about the start of the curse, no one knows for certain how it began – or what will happen next. And this coming year is a disappearance year. Soon something else will disappear from Sterling’s life forever. But as disappearances begin to happen more frequently, and even more massive consequences follow, can Aila and her new friends revoke the curse in time to save the town and all their lost senses?
