Flu Review - Ashes on the Moor by Sarah M. Eden

After the deaths of her parents, Evangeline is abandoned by relatives in a small cotton mill town and forced to become the school teacher. An heiress with no formal educational training, or any life skills whatsoever, Evangeline is forced to beg for help from the unlikeliest of sources, simply to survive. What she learns will forever change her impressions of the working class people of her small town.

Overall, a great historical fiction novel. Don't pick it up if you only want a fluffy read - it's not all sunshine, inheritances, and upper class daisies. But it was not overly sad or melancholy. To me, it was a perfect mix of realism and romance.

I was drawn into the story and appreciated the honest portrayal of the bleak lives of many mill working families; however the hope that the readers were left with was a high note. I felt like the author did a great job of drawing nuanced characters, and I fell in love with both of the main characters easily. There were many fleshed out side characters as well, and the location almost became a character in and of itself.

I would highly recommend any novel by Sarah Eden, but this one was particularly good!
