Flu Review - Winterborne Home for Vengeance and Valor By Ally Carter

This story begins like many others with an orphan girl.  Or… an orphan that has a mothers promise to return and a mysterious key hung around her neck.  Meet April, the not-orphan who lives in an orphanage.  Her life makes a detour on the fateful day her school takes a tour of a fancy museum.  Unknown to April, that same museum would catch fire and destroy any hope of finding out what her key unlocks.  Until, Isabella Nelson invites her to stay at a new home.  The home that carries the same crest that her key has engraved on it.

When I first started this story I thought it was going to be another somber tale of a troubled orphan trying to scrape her way through life.  I wasn’t sure I was going to finish it because I wanted something a little up beat for a change.  What I didn’t bargain on was the way I was drawn in by the third chapterThis book is anything but depressing.  There is so much excitement that I just couldn’t seem to put it down.    Winterborne Home for Vengeance and Valor is a real page-turner.  I may have stayed up too late reading it. ☺  For being a juvenile book it is so well written I would stack it up against some adult reads.

Ally Carter has a beautifully mysterious imagination and it shows in this story.  The plot took so many surprising twists that I found myself excited to pick it back up.  I hardly noticed that the author was giving a full detailed atmosphere because the story was so gripping.  The characters are so well developed that a person with the weakest imagination would be able to picture each one.  There are some significant character lessons brought into the drama and the book resolves itself enough to be satisfying yet leave the reader wanting more.  The first thing I did when I finished the book was look to see if a second one was coming.  There is indeed a sequel, and I will be first on the list to read it.  Fantastic Read for all ages!  I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
