Flu Review - Juniper and Thorn by Ava Reid

Loved, loved, loved this book. As soon as I saw the cover, I knew that I needed to read this story, and the author did not disappoint. Juniper and Thorn was this hauntingly beautiful fairy tale, that had equal parts creepy and whimsy.

You are immediately catapulted into this world of Russian magic, not having a second to get your bearings, but that only adds to the creepiness of the tale. Like the protagonist, the reader does not fully understand what is going on, but you know that you have to keep reading to see the ending.

Both Marlinchen and Sevas come together as these broken people who find their grounding with each other. Their story was so sweet and heartbreaking with both of them learning to grow out of their abuse. Marlinchen is one of those characters who seems like she will remain a simpering Mary Sue, but she grows to such great heights through the story.

I truly could not put this book down, and have already recommended it to my prolific Russian readers. There will definitely be a waiting list for this book, and anyone who loves magic, fairy tales, Russian literature, romance, coming of age, and breaking the bonds of abuse will fall in love with this book.
