Flu Review - The Light of Luna Park by Addison Armstrong

What would you do to save the life of a child? Would you risk everything you had to go against society and authority to keep a child alive? This is the premise of The Light of Luna Park. Set in 1926, Nurse Althea Anderson cannot sit by and allow premature babies to die due to lack of care. She hears about the baby incubator display down at Luna Park in Coney Island, and begs a young couple to take their 2 pound daughter there for treatment. When the husband and doctor to refuse to listen to her, Althea will risk her career and freedom to save the tiny girl’s life.

Twenty five years later, Stella Wright faces her own battle as she advocates for better treatment of her special needs students. Her world is falling apart since the death of her mother, the lack of support from the school, and dealing with her husband’s PTSD from World War II. Then she discovers a letter addressed to her mother which causes her to question her very identity. Stella learns the cost of a mother’s sacrificial love. This is a great book to understand the sacrifices women went through to help better children’s lives, especially children whom society deemed as undesirable.
