Flu Review - The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray

Fans of historical fiction based on a true story will fall in love with The Personal Librarian. The story follows Belle de Costa Greene (formally called Belle Marion Greener), the personal librarian to the famous J.P. Morgan and his exuberant personal library. Belle, an African American woman, passes for White and convinces Morgan to hire her to run his library. No woman had ever run a library of that size before, let alone was given the power and provision to buy rare books and artwork. Belle’s ingenuity and genius drove her to curate a library that would rival museums the world over, and she succeeded. Belle de Costa Greene became the most successful business woman at the beginning of the 20th century, and she earned the admiration and respect of some of the world’s wealthiest and influential men. This work of fiction displays Belle’s life and struggle as a Black woman hiding her identity to make a name for herself in a time where White men stood at the top of the world. Her story is entertaining and inspiring. This is one book that you will not want to miss out on.
