The Song of Achilles delves into the legend of Achilles told through the perspective of his closest companion, Patroclus. Achilles, the greatest Greek fighter of mythology, must come to a decision about his fate. Will he fulfill his destiny to fight at Troy or will he forgo his destiny to remain with Patroclus? Ultimately, as Homer describes in his epic poem, The Iliad, Achilles cannot run from destiny, but he embraces the acclaim given to him as Greek’s mightiest hero. Patroclus, wanting to remain with Achilles, heads to Troy to watch Achilles in battle. Eventually, both men face a battle they cannot win, and their time of earth ends at the gates of Troy.
This is a fantastic read for anyone who loves mythology, Greek history, or classic stories retold in a new light. The Song of Achilles features friendship, romance, battles, defying gods, and is a true coming of age epic. If you want a book that you won’t be able to put down, this is a great option.
