Knives Out or the book The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Full of twists and turns, jump scares and touching scenes, this book has everything you could possibly want from juvenile literature.
Even though this book was first published in 1978, I feel like it is still very readable, and enjoyable today. Any mystery with puzzles and clues would be popular in this age of escape rooms and escape room puzzle mail subscriptions! The characters were, none of them, extremely likable (except Theo and Chris...they were gems) but together, they made for a very interesting story line. And the diversity amongst the characters is something that, thankfully, feels natural today, although it probably wasn’t when it was first written.
Overall, if you have a young person who is interested in mysteries and puzzles and clues but isn't ready or willing to jump into more graphic mystery type novels, hand this one to them! Or literally anyone who wants a good head-scratcher with a fast paced story and an intriguing mystery subplot!
