Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

#1 Shadow and Bone

#2 Siege and Storm

#3 Ruin and Rising

Is the book better than the movie? Usually the answer is yes. I saw the new series coming to Netflix is based on these books so, of course, I had to check them out before I can watch the show. I was searching for a new fantasy series to read and the Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo fit the bill perfectly. The author worked as a Hollywood makeup artist and her attention to visual details really came thru in her writing. Textures and colors played a key role in setting the scene and changing the atmosphere thru out the series. The world of Ravka, its language, lore, and fashion, made me think of Russia during the time of Anastasia and Rasputin. It lent a coldness and unrest to the country in the book which played well beside the overall plot. The protagonist, Alina Starkov, is an orphan in her first year of required military service when she witnesses a traumatic event crossing the Fold, a cursed area that splits Ravka apart. Her power as a Sun Summoner is awakened and she draws the attention of the whole country. What follows is her struggle to follow her heart, fulfill her duty to her country, and find her own identity. I recommend reading the books back to back. They pick up right after each other with minimal repetition of the story. Overall, I enjoyed dipping my toes into the world of grishas and look forward to reading the next book in Leigh Bardugo’s world, Six of Crows.
