Jess Flynn is an average 16 year old girl, living her life in the 1990s. She goes to school, has a crush on her best guy friend, and is worried about her sister who has a serious illness. When something odd falls out of her friend Amber’s back pack at school, things start to spiral out of control. What was that flat metallic rectangle with a picture of an apple on the back of it? Why are her friends and teachers acting funny and suspicious all of a sudden?  And why can Jess not seem to be able to leave her hometown?

Soon Jess discovers that her entire life has been spent on an elaborate television set. And it is not, in fact, the 1990s, but much later.  Jess needs to decide who she can trust as she attempts to break free from her prison that she didn’t even know existed. This is Not the Jess Show has a lot of similarities to the old Jim Carrey movie, The Truman Show. This book is different, however, because it deals with a whole new layer of ethical dilemmas since the main characters are minors. Their lives are being manipulated, yes, but they do not have legal authority to make any major life decisions. So what happens next?
