Flu Review - The Emperor's Ostrich by Julie Berry

Just as the Emperor is about to be given the royal scepter, he goes missing.  The kingdom is in an uproar but there are those that would take advantage of the situation for evil.  In the same world, a milkmaid meets an unusual boy on her quest to find her missing cow and as the pair unknowingly join the Emperor on their journey, all of them learn some of life’s greatest lessons.  Will Begonia find her cow and will the Emperor reach his kingdom in time to save it from evil clutches?

The Emperor’s Ostrich is truly a joy to read!  The atmospheres are laid out masterfully.  From the lush palace to the dirt roads of the country, the reader is taken into the world of the characters.  The story is laid out so poetically that one can’t help but smile at the beauty.

Julie Berry does a fantastic job of capturing each personality presented in the book.  Intertwined in each scene are the Asian cultural customs along with the ancestral spirits so beloved by these people.  The wit and humor makes for a light hearted read with a touch of intrigue thrown in, but not to intense so as to be frightening.  The character building lessons give a satisfying experience and a good deal to think on.  It is a perfect book for young readers who have an appreciation for Anime style or Studio Ghibli, or for cultural exposure to those who may not have discovered preference in taste yet.  All in all, I would give it a 5 out of 5 star rating.
