Flu Review - The Lady and the Highwayman by Sarah Eden

There’s no other way to start this review except by saying, I absolutely LOVED this book! Historical romance, a bit of mystery/intrigue, and the addition of the penny dreadful novels that the characters were supposed to have written - genius!

Meet Elizabeth Black, the headmistress of an elite girls’ finishing school by day and a famous author by night. But what no one else knows, is that on the side, Elizabeth writes penny dreadful novels (as the mysterious “Mr. King”) to help fund her school. When another penny dreadful author starts digging into “Mr. King’s” true identity, Elizabeth will have to keep all her wits about her in order to maintain her secret identity!

I tend to love Victorian era historical fiction, anyway, but this "proper romance" type book was just what I enjoy - witty banter, fun plot lines, but not crazy heavy on the romance. I loved the penny dreadful premise - and the fictional gentleman's club of authors was a hoot! There was such a wide variety of characters represented that you could tell the author was having fun giving slice of life snippets of all the different types of people who lived in Victorian London.

The inclusion of both the main characters' penny dreadful novels was really neat. I enjoyed reading both and imagining the characters writing them - they had very distinct voices. And speaking of the main characters, I quite enjoyed them and their romance as well. As opposed to just a "love at first sight" romance, they were drawn together by similar interests and pursuits as well as a desire to help the less fortunate. Neither was perfect, but they made each other better.

I would highly recommend this book if you are looking for a fun historical romance with some intrigue and adventure thrown into the mix! It is available from WCPL through Libby/Overdrive on eBook plus it is available in regular print or large print if you prefer physical copies. And to top it all off, this is just the first book in a planned series!
